Alison Blickle @NYC's Kravets Wehby Gallery
Tuesday, 06 May 2014 /// Written by Trippe

Los Angeles based Alison Blickle who showed here in San Francisco at Eleanor Harwood last year (PHOTOS) recently showed new paintings in New York at Kravets Wehby Gallery. Lovely works.

So what's interesting about Alison Blickle's pieces at Kravets Wehby Gallery is that she is taking the traditional concept (documented by Frazer so well) of magic and applying it to a type of inner process that seems to be the primary promise of most spiritual/religious systems. Magic is no longer the ritual to ensure good crops, better health or a smooth childbirth. -continue reading

Pose MSK in the heart of New York City
Thursday, 06 March 2014 /// Written by Trippe

The L.I.S.A. Project NYC invites Pose MSK to paint a mural in Little Italy on the eve of his show at the VOLTA art fair.
This week Pose MSK, who is visiting New York City from Chicago to take part in the VOLTA art fair with Jonathan Levine Gallery, painted a mural in Little Italy with The L.I.S.A. Project NYC. Pose's work combines elements of signpainting, advertising, comic books and graffiti into collage-like pop-art compositions. The mural is located at 188 Lafayette, at the corner of Lafayette and Broome, and is the only mural Pose has running right now in Manhattan, although many New Yorkers may already be familiar with Pose's work since he painted at Houston and Bowery alongside Revok last year. -CONTINUE READING

Jeff Depner at NYC's Nancy Margolis
Friday, 15 November 2013 /// Written by Trippe

Vancouver based painter Jeff Depner ('12 interview) is currently showing new paintings in VARIATIONS BLACK NAPKINS at NYC's Nancy Margolis Gallery through Dec 7th. -PHOTOS

The work ebbs and flows between graphic qualities and thick painterly styles with muted but contemporary feeling colors. The constant process of ‘improvised moves' allows some of the work to be based in grid like structures. It allows some of the smaller paintings a chance for inquiry in constructive qualities and aspects of painting, inserting his work into the long history of painting. -our '12 interview

In his abstract acrylic paintings, Vancouver-based Depner explores compositional structure through the relationship between colors. His works’ painted layers create singular, functioning systems of interacting parts, yet juxtapositions permeate—between the architectonic and the organic, the graphic and the painterly, the matte and the opulent.

ICY Signs + Stephen Powers
ICY Signs - Perfection is Standard, Mistakes Cost Extra
October 24 to November 16, 2013
@Joshua Liner, NYC
I moved home to the Bay Area about 4 years ago and recently had the opportunity to visit New York City for the first time since. Having missed Barry McGee & Raymond Pettibon by a day, I felt lucky to have an old friend clue me into the ICY Signs show when I arrived. PHOTOS

Over the last decade, Steven Powers has proven his talent, wit and superior work ethic many times over. Beyond getting to study his work up close, it was neat to see the talent of all the other sign painters and collaborators he keeps company with. Had I known John would be posting these shit photos I would have documented their work a bit more properly. Take a minute to visit the gallery's selected work pages to see for yourself. - Adam C.

Banksy NYC, Over 'N Out
Friday, 01 November 2013 /// Written by Trippe

Well, Banksy's month long experiment with the city of NYC is all but wrapped up... Gotta say that the "Spray Art" booth was his best. That guy from Chicago who bought 4 including the iconic flower molotov piece is sitting pretty. Lovely ~ banksyny.com

Banky's "Spray Art" ~~~ $60 each

In an audio guide accompanying the work (available on Banksy's website), the narrator says Banksy said of his month-long endeavor: "If just one child has been inspired to pick up a can of paint and make some art, that would be statistically disappointing considering how much work I put in."

He also said that if there was one cohesive message from the show, it's that "Outside is where art should live, among us," and that "rather than street art being a fad, maybe the last 1,000 years of art history are a blip, when art came inside in the service of the church and institutions." ~read on

Recent Works by David Lyle
Tuesday, 23 April 2013 /// Written by Trippe

NYC based David Lyle emailed over some recent works as he prepares for his upcoming shows in both NYC and Paris. Check out some of his previous works.

Working from found photographs, Lyle's paintings are created through a reductive painting process where each piece is rendered using only black paint and turpentine. Lyle begins this process by priming a panel with white gesso. He then paints a thin, rich, oily black veneer over the primed panel, slowly and systematically developing his images by removing some of the black paint with a cloth. In doing so, Lyle renders layer upon layer of various values of black paint resulting in his signature-style of luminescent works.

Kenny Scharf Arrested For Graffiti In Bushwick, Finds Cops Are Fans
Monday, 22 April 2013 /// Written by Administrator

VIA GOTHEMIST - Famous graffiti artist Kenny Scharf was arrested early Saturday morning in Bushwick for plying his trade. According to an NYPD spokesman, officers found Scharf in front of 209 Morgan Avenue at 1:03 a.m. in possession of "two spraycans which he used to paint a snake on the wall of the establishment." ArtSucks reports that Scharf wrote on his Facebook page that his arresting officers weren't total Philistines: "Cops who arrested me were fans and wanted to talk about exit through the gift shop and even liked the tag." ~continue reading

Huey Crowley - Recent Paintings
Friday, 21 December 2012 /// Written by Van Edwards

NYC based painter Huey Crowley, who was in our group show 11.11.11 last year, emailed over some new paintings based on reinterpreted children's fairy tales his grandmother read to him as a child.

Huey writes I chose to reinterpret these stories through my own narrative, and I chose excerpts from my own life to explore them. For example, in the painting "Toad I miss U" I am painting what I think it would be like if someone never listened to these stories or had a role model in their life... what their life would be like if they never had an adult around to read to them, or to care for them. The painting depicts an empty subway, with a homeless person's makeshift home inside. Surrounding the home are messages calling out to find Frog and Toad. The absence of role models can leave one’s life empty.

I don't think at this point it needs to be written since the last update to Fecal Face was a long time ago, but...

I, John Trippe, have put this baby Fecal Face to bed. I'm now focusing my efforts on running ECommerce at DLX which I'm very excited about... I guess you can't take skateboarding out of a skateboarder.

It was a great 15 years, and most of that effort can still be found within the site. Click around. There's a lot of content to explore.

Hit me up if you have any ECommerce related questions. - trippe.io

The Death of the Artist—and the Birth of the Creative Entrepreneur
Wednesday, 21 January 2015 10:34

When works of art become commodities and nothing else, when every endeavor becomes “creative” and everybody “a creative,” then art sinks back to craft and artists back to artisans—a word that, in its adjectival form, at least, is newly popular again. Artisanal pickles, artisanal poems: what’s the difference, after all? So “art” itself may disappear: art as Art, that old high thing. Which—unless, like me, you think we need a vessel for our inner life—is nothing much to mourn.

Hard-working artisan, solitary genius, credentialed professional—the image of the artist has changed radically over the centuries. What if the latest model to emerge means the end of art as we have known it? --continue reading

John Felix Arnold III on the Road to NYC

Well, John Felix Arnold III is at it again. This time, he and Carolyn LeBourgios packed an entire show into the back of a Prius and drove across the country to install it at Superchief Gallery in NYC. I met with him last week as he told me about the trip over delicious burritos at Taqueria Cancun (which is right across the street from FFDG and serves what I think is the best burrito in the city) as the self proclaimed "Only overweight artist in the game" spilled all the details.

London based illustrator FRENCH recently held a show of new works at the Melbourne based Mild Manners

Henry Gunderson at Ever Gold, SF

Ever Gold opened a new solo show by NYC based Henry Gunderson a couple Saturday nights ago and it was literally packed. So packed I couldn't actually see most of the art - but a big crowd doesn't seem like a problem. I got a good laugh at what I would call the 'cock climbing wall' as it was one of the few pieces I could see over the crowd. I haven't gotten a chance to go back and check it all out again, but I'm definitely going to as the paintings that I could get a peek at were really high quality and intruiguing. You should do the same.

Mario Wagner @Hashimoto

Mario Wagner (Berkeley) opened his new solo show A Glow that Transfers Creativity last Saturday night at Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco.

Serge Gay Jr. @Spoke Art

The paintings in the show are each influenced by a musician, ranging from Freddy Mercury, to Madonna, to A Tribe Called Quest and they are so stylistically consistent with each musician's persona that they read as a cohesive body of work with incredible variation. If you told me they were each painted by a different person, I would not hesitate to believe you and it's really great to see a solo show with so much variety. The show is fun, poppy, very well done, and absolutely worth a look and maybe even a listen.

Sun Milk in Vienna

With rising rent in SF and knowing mostly other young artists without capitol, I desired a way to live rent free, have a space to do my craft, and get to see more of the world. Inspired by the many historical artists who have longed similar longings I discovered the beauty of artist residencies. Lilo runs Adhoc Collective in Vienna which not only has a fully equipped artists creative studio, but an indoor halfpipe, and private artist quarters. It was like a modern day castle or skate cathedral. It exists in almost a utopic state, totally free to those that apply and come with a real passion for both art and skateboarding

The Marsh Barge - Traveling the Mississippi River from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico

For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to quit my job, move out of my house, leave everything and travel again. So on August 21, 2013 I pushed a canoe packed full of gear into the headwaters of the Mississippi River in Lake Itasca, Minnesota, along with four of my best friends. Exactly 100 days later, I arrived at a marina near the Gulf of Mexico in a sailboat.
